Story Time Procedures

Story time is offered in an effort to provide early literacy skills to children and to encourage them to become lifelong readers. We invite you to bring your children to our story times offered over the week.

Please register in advance for one of the story time sessions we offer (unless given permission by Miss Maria); check the website for registration announcements. Residents of East Rutherford will be given priority during time of registration.  There will be a set time for registration. After the registration period ends or space has filled up, a waitlist will be created. Those on the waitlist will be contacted in the event a participant can no longer attend the program.

We ask that you register for ONLY ONE STORY TIME PER CHILD.

This is an effort to be fair to all families and give others a chance to participate. Families with more than one child that are age appropriate for the same program must put the name of each child on a separate registration.

Please note story time is for the registered child of the appropriate age.  If a parent wants to bring siblings (not within the age of the class) it will be only permissible if room allows and if Miss Maria is notified in advance.

Due to the growing popularity of our story time programs, the community and to be fair to all children who wish to be involved please notify the staff (via phone call or email) if you cannot attend a session or will no longer be attending story time.

Any child missing three consecutive sessions will be removed and those on the waitlist will be included.

Story Time Reminders

  • We ask you to turn off all cell phones and texting devices during library programs.
  • Please do not eat during story time unless otherwise noted.  Please feed your child before or after story time.
  • Parents are asked to remove their child if s/he becomes disruptive or restless during story time.  They could return when s/he is ready.  This is requested in an effort to be courteous to the other children, so they could enjoy the program undisturbed. The cooperation of the parent will be appreciated by all
  • Parents may not carry on conversations with others or read to their child during Story Time. Such behavior is rude and inconsiderate of other participants and very distracting for the librarian. Parents are encouraged to participate and show by example how much singing, dancing, and being silly can be!
  • Promptness is greatly appreciated. Interruptions by late arrivals destroy the mood and concentration of the group which is necessary for a run and successful program. Continual tardiness may mean the loss of the privilege to attend programs.
